Delhi minister Atishi, 43, is set to become the next Chief Minister of Delhi after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal proposed her name during a meeting of the party’s legislative wing. Lawmakers unanimously stood in support of Kejriwal’s choice, backing Atishi as his successor.

The decision comes just days after Kejriwal announced his resignation, two days after being granted bail in the excise policy case.

Lawmakers Endorse Atishi’s Appointment

Earlier, the AAP legislators had authorized Kejriwal to choose his replacement. They convened at Kejriwal’s residence at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, before he is expected to submit his resignation at around 4:30 PM, clearing the path for Atishi to formally stake her claim to lead the next government.

Atishi holds multiple key portfolios in Kejriwal’s cabinet, including education, finance, public works department, power, and water. Her broad responsibilities have earned her a prominent position within the government, further cementing her selection as the next Chief Minister.

Atishi’s Political Journey

Atishi was first elected as a legislator from the Kalkaji constituency in 2020. She was appointed as a minister in March 2023 following the arrest of then Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the excise policy case. Coming from the influential Punjabi community, Atishi is seen as a leader who can continue to draw support from a key voting bloc in Delhi.

Kejriwal’s Resignation and Leadership Change

Kejriwal’s resignation came after a series of consultations with AAP’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC), the party’s highest decision-making body. On Monday, Kejriwal discussed his succession with PAC members, including Saurabh Bhardwaj, Gopal Rai, and Kailash Gahlot, as well as Dalit leaders Rakhi Birla and Kuldeep Kumar.

Despite speculation around several contenders for the Chief Minister post, including Kejriwal’s wife Sunita, Atishi emerged as the unanimous choice.

No Deputy CM for Delhi

Sources indicate that there will be no Deputy Chief Minister, and Atishi is expected to take the oath during a special Assembly session on September 26-27. Speaking on her appointment, Gopal Rai noted that Atishi has been given the responsibility in “testing times,” as AAP continues to face challenges from political opposition.

Atishi’s leadership is seen as a significant transition for the party as it prepares for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections scheduled for next year.
