Atishi Takes Charge as Delhi’s Chief Minister
New Leadership in Delhi
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi was sworn in as the eighth Chief Minister of Delhi on September 23, 2024, following her oath of office on September 21. In a symbolic gesture, she chose not to sit in the chair used by her predecessor, Arvind Kejriwal, stating, “This is Arvind Kejriwal ji’s chair,” and opted for a different seat instead.
A Gesture of Allegiance
Atishi’s decision to place an empty chair beside her during the ceremony signified her allegiance to Kejriwal. The 43-year-old, now Delhi’s youngest Chief Minister, compared herself to Bharat from the Ramayana, who ruled in Lord Ram’s absence. “I will govern Delhi for the next four months with the same spirit,” she remarked.
Commitment to Kejriwal’s Legacy
Atishi emphasized her intention to support Kejriwal’s return as Chief Minister in the upcoming elections. “This chair belongs to Arvind Kejriwal, and I am certain that in the February elections, the people of Delhi will once again elect him as their Chief Minister,” she stated, reaffirming her loyalty to the party’s founding leader.
Swearing-In and Cabinet Formation
Atishi was sworn in as the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi, following Sheila Dikshit and Sushma Swaraj. Alongside her, five cabinet ministers were sworn in, including four from the previous government and one new member.
Background and Portfolios
Atishi was chosen to succeed Kejriwal after his resignation due to an interim bail order from the Supreme Court related to the excise policy case. She retained 13 key portfolios, including education, revenue, finance, power, and public works department (PWD), ensuring continuity in governance.
