Stock Market Today

Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty ended in the red on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, as lack of clear market triggers and profit booking weighed on investor sentiment.

The BSE Sensex closed at 81,396.67, down 154.96 points or 0.19%, while the NSE Nifty settled at 24,775.10, losing 51.10 points or 0.25%.

Despite the overall weakness, broader markets outperformed. The Nifty MidCap index gained 0.19%, and the Nifty SmallCap index rose 0.36%, reflecting sustained interest in smaller companies amid a choppy large-cap environment.

Gainers & Laggards

On the BSE, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, Infosys, ICICI Bank, Adani Ports, Tata Motors, Bajaj Finserv, and SBI were among the top gainers. In contrast, ITC, Nestle, M&M, IndusInd Bank, Asian Paints, and Titan led the decline, dragging the indices lower.

Among sectors, the Nifty PSU Bank index stood out, advancing 0.66% and supporting the market on an otherwise weak day. Meanwhile, FMCG and Auto stocks were under pressure, with the FMCG index slipping over 1%, reflecting concerns over consumption trends.

IPO Watch

Belrise Industries debuted on the bourses today, listing at ₹100 per share on the NSE, which is an 11.11% premium over its IPO issue price of ₹90. The strong listing added some excitement to an otherwise subdued trading session.

Meanwhile, Schloss Bangalore (Leela Hotels IPO) concludes its subscription today. The issue, which opened on May 26, has witnessed a muted response from investors so far.

Closing Highlights

Markets started flat amid mixed global cues but failed to build momentum. Fund outflows triggered by large block deals and increased primary market activity added to the cautious tone, leading to a 240-point drop in the Sensex by the closing bell.
