Ratan Naval Tata, former chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away at the age of 86 on Wednesday night at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Tata, a transformative leader of the Tata Group, oversaw the company’s global expansion during India’s economic liberalization and was deeply respected for his philanthropic efforts.
Nation Pays Tribute
Tata Sons chairperson, N Chandrasekaran, expressed profound loss, calling Tata an “uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions shaped not only the Tata Group but the very fabric of our nation.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a heartfelt tribute on X, remembered Tata as a “visionary business leader and compassionate soul.” Tributes from politicians, business leaders, and public figures poured in, remembering his humility and contributions to society.
State Mourning Declared
Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde declared a state mourning on October 10, Thursday, with all national flags across government buildings to be flown at half-mast. A state funeral will be accorded in honor of Tata’s contributions.
A Life of Philanthropy and Leadership
Tata was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan for his philanthropy, which impacted millions through healthcare, education, and clean water initiatives. His leadership of the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012 saw the company’s growth into a $100 billion global conglomerate.
